For players of a higher rank, a queue can last an entire hour in real-time which has effectively crushed many Overwatch streamer and content creators careers. In addition to this, the queue times for certain roles, specifically the offensive role can last upward of 10 minutes of sitting in the menus waiting for the game to begin. Metas that allowed for the flexibility of 3 tanks and 3 supports to work simply can’t exist due to how the game is structured at this point. The con to this, however, is that it is a far cry from the hero-switching system we had during the initial debut of the game. It ensures that each team will be balanced and there will never be an instance where a player will switch off of their role. In some regards, this is the best thing that has ever happened for people trying to play games in a competitive manner. This worked initially, but given the reception of how long it takes to find groups, as well as splitting the player base, this solution for the meta problem didn’t seem to be solved.įast forward to present day Overwatch and Blizzard have integrated a role-queue system which locks players into their role of choice when playing online. At some point, Blizzard tried to make it easier by adding a group system for players to find others who play roles to fill in the gap. Sometimes players would adhere to this implied ruleset but it came at the cost of enjoying the game. With such a lopsided way of playing the game players were faced with the task of self-governing each other to find a solution for the game pushing the meta onto each other. Tanks are necessary to engage for the team and provide space for others to combat their foes. Teams without healers faced a significant disadvantage as enemy teams had more self sustain. The issue with this mode is that the former meta suggestions from before slowly started to feel more mandatory for players to succeed in a ranked environment. Similar to Smash, players found ways to make Overwatch more viable in an Esports setting and eventually Blizzard, the developers of Overwatch, included a ranked gameplay mode. Overwatch itself debuted without a competitive mode but fans clamored for a means of making their favorite game more engaging. This isn’t to dismiss the class as they effectively bear the burden of taking down opponents effectively and assisting other allies but it also brings into question a very crucial aspect of the game itself. It doesn’t require nearly as much micromanagement as playing a healer where you need to effectively keep 5 other players alive and fend for yourself. The offense role has double the number of playable characters compared to the other two classes which can lead to a massive imbalance in terms of people being able to play what they want. The offense role is considered the most popular role and for good reason too. Overwatch’s three main roles have always been a point of contention amongst many players.
